Prepared using four sources:

  1. 1781 manuscript by C.F.G. Schwencke.
  2. Manuscript ca. 1775–1800.
  3. 1778 manuscript by J.C. Hossbach.
  4. 1980 urtext edited by Willem Poot (pub. Broekmans and van Poppel, Amsterdam).

The sources are mainly distinguished by the presence or abscense of the fantasia. Sources 1 & 2 contain the entire fantasia. Source 3 contains only the closing C minor chord of the fantasia, but is nonetheless titled “Fantasia et Fuga” (the other pieces are titled only “Fuga”). Source 4 omits the fantasia entirely; the first entry of the fugue begins in a half-bar. Source 4 was intended to give the text of 1756.
